4 Non Blondes
June 27
4 Non Blondes are back — and making their long-awaited debut in Portugal, opening the Main Stage for a historic moment at Rock in Rio Lisboa.
Formed in 1989 in San Francisco, the band returns after decades away from the spotlight, their near-mythical status only heightening anticipation for what promises to be one of the standout shows of the edition.
Their rise was meteoric: after signing with Interscope Records, they released Bigger, Better, Faster, More? (1992), driven by Linda Perry’s unmistakable powerhouse vocals. The single What’s Up? exploded on modern rock radio, crossed into the mainstream, and pushed the album into the Top 11 on the Billboard 200 — a defining moment in alternative music history. The music video became an MTV sensation, helping the album surpass six million sales worldwide and earning multiple gold and platinum certifications.
At their peak, 4 Non Blondes performed alongside Aerosmith, Neil Young and Pearl Jam, and contributed to soundtracks for iconic films including Wayne’s World 2 and Airheads. In 1995, Linda Perry departed to pursue her solo and production career — a path that led her to collaborate with Christina Aguilera, Pink, Gwen Stefani and Alicia Keys, establishing her as one of the most influential creators of her generation.
Despite their brief existence, the band’s impact proved timeless. What’s Up? became one of the biggest collective anthems of all time — and resurfaced powerfully among new generations. In 2024, it entered Spotify’s Billions Club, went viral once again on TikTok and Reels, and inspired countless covers that keep the song circulating across pop culture. It’s one of those rare intergenerational songs, sung passionately by both those who lived it in the ’90s and those discovering it today.
After decades away from the stage, 4 Non Blondes return on 27 June to the City of Rock for what will undoubtedly be a historic concert. At Rock in Rio Lisboa, they bring nostalgia, power and emotion together in a celebration of female strength in rock, authenticity and the enduring legacy of a song that continues to unite generations.
